I’ve been crocheting for about 10 years now, and while it started out as a hobby, about a year and a half ago I started teaching Learn to Crochet Classes at my fitness studio…yes you read that right, at my fitness studio, Coach Mel’s Health and Fitness for Life. Back in 2008 or 2009, I can’t remember for sure, a very good friend, my neighbor taught me how to crochet. I had learned from my grandmother way back when I was little but never pursued it, instead I always had a baseball hat on and a glove on my hand, I was a softball player from a young age and later a coach for 22 years (see where the Coach Mel comes into play). Well anyway, my friend Debbie taught me how to crochet and it has evolved from there. Most recently I’ve been holding monthly classes where a teach a new stitch each month; last year we made squares with each stitch and then sewed them all together to have a completed afghan at the end of the year (my finished afghan, which was raffled off to a participant of the class is below). I learned a lot from doing that FIRST – coming up with written instructions for 6 x 6 squares is not easy and you need to check you patterns over and over again before handing them to people to use (we had a lot of edits in year 1, thank you to everyone who helped me) SECOND – making 60 squares (we did 6 each month for 10 months) was a piece of cake….putting together 60 squares…well lets just say that was NOT a piece of cake!! So this year we are making a progressive afghan, I teach a new stitch each month that is added on to the previous months stitch, this too is tricky but we are having a lot of fun and the best news ever…no squares to sew together at the end, we’ll use December as our boarder month!! All of that to say that has lead me here to Coach Mel’s Crochet Corner, I want to be able to bring my creations/patterns to more people so I’ve decided to start this site to do just that. I’m sure there will be a bit of a leaning curve so please bear with me as I learn how to best make videos, take photo’s of my work, make this blog user friendly, etc. but if you stick with me I hope you will find value and share my site with your friends.
The first pattern I will be including here is a scarf that we start in the final week of the Learn to Crochet Class, it’s a quick. fun, easy scarf that can be left as a traditional scarf or made into a infinity scarf, I call it the Fancy Fan Scarf…look for it soon!! I am currently working on a fun poncho which will be much more involved than the scarf and I will have some people working with my pattern before I present it here, but that too will be coming soon.
