Simple Crochet Poncho Pattern

Are you fairly new to crocheting? Do you know how to make a chain, half double crochet and double crochet? Then this simple crochet poncho pattern is for you and can be completed quickly because it uses very simple stitches! The pattern contains instructions using a lighter weight yarn (3) or worsted weight yarn (4); using a different hook size for each.

pon·cho NOUN a garment of a type originally worn in South America, made of a thick piece of woolen cloth with a slit in the middle for the head.

A poncho is often referred to as a blanket like structure with a slit in the middle for the head. They come in all shapes and sizes and can be made with various types of materials. The “granny cluster” is used in the simple crochet poncho pattern. You may have heard of a granny square, it uses the same type of structure but it works with only two corners to create an oblong style “blanket with a slit in the middle.

How to change colors on your poncho

There are two different ways you can go about having the poncho change colors. There are many types of yarn that transition the color for you such as a Lion Brand Mandala yarn. The photo above is using Vanna’s Style yarn by Lion Brand Yarns. When making it with different colors you can determine the number of rows for each color and changed the colors manually.

The start of this poncho is the trickiest part, I promise, once you get through the first two rows it’s a breeze from there. The video below shows you step by step through row three.

Simple Crochet Poncho Pattern

Pattern created by Melanie Knox/Coach Mel’s Crochet Corner

Yarn used:  Vanna’s Style by Lion Brand Yarns

Denim, Silver, Teal, and Taupe (1 100 skein of each color)

You will need approximately 300 – 350 g of yarn depending on the size you make your poncho (edit – if you are going to add the scalloped edge you will need closer to 400 g of yarn)

I Crochet Hook for a 3 weight yarn – J Hook for a 4 weight yarn

ch = chain

hdc = half double crochet

dc = double crochet

sl st = slip stitch

For (3) weight yarn: Ch 88, sl st in first ch to create a loop (be certain the loop is not twisted)

For (4) weight yarn: Ch 80, follow instructions above

R1 – ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), hdc in next ch and each ch around (87 dc (3), 79 dc (4)), sl st in the 2nd chain for a total of 88 hdc (3) or 80 hdc (4)

R2 – ch 2 (counts as dc), (2dc, ch 2, 3dc, ch 1= corner) * skip 3, 3dc, ch 1, repeat from * 9x (3) for a total of 10 clusters, 8x (4) for a total of 9 clusters, (skip 3, 3dc, ch 2, 3dc, ch1 = corner), * skip 3, 3dc, ch1, repeat from * 9x (3) for a total of 10 clusters, 8x (4) for a total of 9 clusters, sl st to top of starting chain, sl st across each dc of first corner cluster, sl st into the ch 2 space

R3 –  ch 2 (counts as dc), (2dc, ch 2, 3dc, ch 1, all in ch 2 space = corner), 3 dc, ch 1 in each ch 1 space from prior row, repeat clusters to next corner, (3dc, ch2, 3dc, ch 1, all in ch 2 space = corner), 3 dc, ch 1 in each ch 1 space from prior row to end, sl st into the top of the starting chain, sl st across each dc of first corner cluster, sl st into the ch 2 space

Repeat R3 until poncho reaches desired size.  If you are changing colors, complete the 4 slip stitches at the corner and then change color prior to making the starting chain for the new row.  You can vary the number of rows in each color.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

EDIT – I decided to add a scalloped edge on my poncho, it really finishes it off nicely. Here are the instructions to add the scallop…video will follow soon.

Scalloped Edge Instructions

Start in the center of a cluster of 3 dc (NOT in a corner cluster but one to the left of the corner)

Attach your yarn in the center dc of the cluster, put 5 dc (scallop) in the next ch 1 space, connect the scallop to the center of the next 3 dc cluster with a sc, continue with this until you reach the corner.

You will have a sc in the center dc of the first cluster on the corner, put 7 dc in the ch 2 corner space, anchor it to the middle of the next cluster with a sc.

Continue down the other side of your poncho with 5 dc in each ch 1 space and a sc in the center dc of each cluster until you reach the next corner. Complete corner as you did above with the final sc in the same dc that you started the edging with.

I hope you enjoy this crochet poncho project, it can be worked up super fast and will make a great gift for someone!

I would love your feedback on the pattern and the videos.
